"Cinder" *Spoiler free* Book Review

Hello everyone!

So, long time, no see! I know I´ve been a bit lazy but I am back again and I hope I´m going to post more frequently. At least that´s what I´m trying to do. :)
Anyway, so almost a whole year has passed since my last blog post and I have done a lot of reading during that time. My most recent read was "The Lunar Chronicles" series by Marissa Meyer which this post is about. And I have to say I am absolutely obsessed with it. So without further ado let´s get started.

"The Lunar Chronicles" by author Marissa Meyer is a series of different fairytale re-tellings which all take place in a futuristic world. The story begins with the first book "Cinder" (a re-telling of the classic fairytale "Cinderella") and we follow the name- giving character Cinder, who is the best mechanic in New Beijing... And also a cyborg, which is why her stepmother and one of her two stepsisters are not treating her very well. One day Crown-Prince Kaito brings her an android to fix which sets the whole story into movement. Cinder tries to fix the android and besides that has to deal with her stepmother who goes completely mad when the nicer one of Cinders stepsisters, Peony, gets infected with the deadly plague, Letumosis, which has been on earth for several years and seems to be incurable. Cinders stepmother "volunteers" her for plague research during which Cinder finds out more about her and her life before becoming a cyborg at the age of eleven of which she has no memory. Meanwhile Prince Kai has to deal with the death of his father, which makes him the Emperor of the Eastern Commonwealth, and with the evil Queen Levana of Luna who can manipulate Earthens into doing and feeling things they usually wouldn´t do or feel, and who wants to marry Kai in order to take over Planet Earth.

I have heard things about this book since the day it came out and at first I was interested in a fairytale re-telling until I found out about the sci-fi, futuristic, cyborg part. I thought "Cinderella... as a cyborg??" And I wasn´t sure if I wanted to read this book. But: I WAS SO WRONG! I wonder why I hadn´t picked it up earlier. Because this book is amazing!
Although the story was a little bit predictable at times I really enjoyed reading it. The book has all the important elements of the original fairytale like the evil stepmother, the pumpkin, the great ball at the end of the story and of course the most important part of "Cinderella": the scene where she loses her shoe at the ball. Although Cinder loses a bit more than just her shoe. ;)
But having all these elements doesn´t mean it´s completely the same story. There are lots of new things added to the story which makes it a lot more interesting to read. I really enjoyed that Peony was a nice character and I loved Cinders android friend, Iko. I loved to get to know more about this new world where they try to get an alliance with the people of the moon and try to find a cure for the blue fever. Also, it was nice to get Kai´s perspective for once, as in the original fairytale we don´t get to know that much about the prince himself. He is just kind of there, whereas in "Cinder" Kai is a really well-written character *and also the King of sass*. :)
Besides that there are different issues that are dealt with within this book that we can transfer to our world today.
All in all the book had me hooked from the start and I couldn´t put it down until I was finished. The story is very tense at times, the characters are awesome and there even is a bit of foreshadowing of the following books. For example, we hear about Princess Winter, we get a glimpse of Cress and we even get to see Jacin, who doesn´t seem that important but who will be one of the main characters as the story continues.
(Oh, and also, the covers of the series are so beautiful!!!)
I give "Cinder" five out of five stars. [*****]

Have you read "Cinder"? What did you think of it? Let me know in the comments below what your favourite scene was. I would love to know and talk to you about it. <3
